Safeguarding public health is among the most important responsibilities of our civic leaders, and it was in this interest that I voted yes to ban smoking in multifamily residential units in Corte Madera.
This issue has been repeatedly raised by residents who have been subjected to tobacco smoke in their own homes by close-by neighbors, or who have no choice but to live in apartments where previous residents smoked. After a careful examination of the public health data and balancing the pros and cons, I voted that residents should be allowed to smoke in designated smoking areas on multifamily properties, but not in residential units.
We support all our residents in reaching their full potential, and stand ready to help anyone struggling with addiction. If you are battling an addition to nicotine or any other substance and would like help, please reach out to us for resources.
