Adopt Compost & Recycling Ordinance - YES

Like seemingly much of what we do at Town Hall, this vote was required by state law. Under Senate Bill 1383, all California cities are required to adopt an ordinance setting out plans to reduce organic waste disposal in landfills (a major source of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases) by 75% by 2025.

The State did provide a template ordinance for cities to use, which Town staff tailored to Corte Madera. In our case, practical changes to residents and businesses will be minimal, as the law largely codifies many of the recycling and composting systems and practices that have already existed in Corte Madera.

Passing this ordinance prevents Corte Madera taxpayers from getting sued, while reducing Corte Madera's carbon footprint—a win-win, in my book.
